Most people are good at managing things around them–their families, their homes, their jobs, and even their companies. However, managing their own feelings is a big mystery, an enormous barrier to happiness and to living out their vocations.
Hosted by the Harvard Catholic Forum on Tuesday, 6 February 2024 at 1930 UTC, Prof Arthur Brooks, Parker Gilbert Montgomery Professor of the Practice of Public and Nonprofit Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School and Professor of Management Practice at the Harvard Business School, will introduce the amazing science of emotional self-management, which shows a deep convergence with the wisdom of Faith. From the springboard provided by knowledge, faith, and a few changes in habits, each of us can take control of our emotions and lead lives that are more satisfying, successful, and in accord with our deeper purpose.
In his late twenties, while still performing as a classical French hornist, Prof Brooks earned his BA through distance learning at Thomas Edison State College, followed by an MA in Economics from Florida Atlantic University. At 31, he left music and earned an MPhil and PhD in Public Policy Analysis from the Rand Graduate School, after which he began his teaching career.
Before joining the Harvard faculty in July 2019, Brooks served for ten years as president of the American Enterprise Institute, a public policy think tank in Washington, DC. He is the author of 11 books, including the national bestsellers Love Your Enemies (2019), The Conservative Heart (2015), and The Road to Freedom (2012). He is a columnist for The Atlantic, host of the podcast The Art of Happiness with Arthur Brooks, and subject of the 2019 documentary film The Pursuit.
