Upcoming Webinars

The Trinity of Sin, God’s Response, and Human Learning

By Rev. Prof. Yusufu Turaki (Nigeria)

Many African Christians cannot explain what sin is, how it affects humans and society, or how it came into the world. The best they can offer is a mix of popular opinions, traditional views and guesswork that falls far short of what Scripture teaches. Consequently, many do not understand God’s response to sin, much less how sin affects human learning.

On Thursday, 16 December 2021 at 1400 UTC/GMT, Rev Prof Yusufu Turaki, Professor of Theology and Social Ethics at Jos Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) Theological Seminary, an evangelical seminary in Jos, Nigeria, will draw on his understanding of Africa’s traditional beliefs and social and spiritual values and will explain the scriptural teaching about the origin, nature, effects and power of sin and God’s solution to it in terms that make sense to Africans. He will, then, discuss how this understanding affects human learning.

Prior to the webinar, be sure to read Prof Turaki’s book, The Trinity of Sin (Hippo Books, 2011).

Faith-Integrated Being, Knowing, and Doing

by Sarinah Lo (Indonesia)

Most studies of the integration of faith and learning focus on cognitive aspects and are conducted in North American contexts. In contrast, Dr. Sarinah Lo focuses her empirical research on the integration of faith and learning in a holistic manner that encompasses faith-integrated being, knowing and doing, not just thinking. She studies Christian faculty in the context of Indonesian higher education contexts.

On Thursday, 20 January 2022 at 1400 UTC/GMT, Dr. Lo, Program Director for Graduate Education at BTS in Indonesia, who has spent 25 years in teaching and educational administration, will discuss the findings of her study of Christian faculty in Indonesia and their understanding of integrating faith into their various disciplines.

Dr. Lo concludes that Christian faculty members in Indonesia need to be equipped with biblical-theological and philosophical foundations, educational theories and practices, critical reflective practices, and a structure of support which includes personal growth, a community of believers and a community of academics. In preparation for the webinar, we encourage you to read the introduction to her book Faith-Integrated Being, Knowing, Doing (Langham, 2020) as well as her Special Book Feature by INCHE.

Society Updates and Opportunities

Job Search Updated

Prof. Dorothy Oluwagbemi-Jacob (Nigeria) serves as the Society’s volunteer Job Search and Missions Coordinator. She has laboured diligently to re-envision this Society service, previously called the “Job Board.”

Before Prof. Oluwagbemi-Jacob took over this role, this service offered only a list of jobs from around the world. However, Prof. Oluwagbemi-Jacob has higher aspirations. She wants to encourage and educate our members about, cross-cultural missions.

Prof. Oluwagbemi-Jacob continues to list jobs, primarily in under-served regions of the world as well as openings posted by members. But she does not stop there. She augments this list by providing links to three trusted job-search engines where you can explore more than 1,000 academic jobs. Furthermore, this service now also provides a growing library of resources to equip members to cross borders and cultures in obedience to Jesus’ Great Commission.

The International Network for Christian Higher Education (INCHE), a Society partner, will host a conference on 6–8 April 2022 in Budapest that aims to bridge gaps between Christians working and studying in the different fragments of European society. Discussions will offer insights into different roles we can play as Christians in this fragmented situation and ways to think about and work together in community building. Only by building new communities and rebuilding old ones can we restore and strengthen the network of European Christianity. Registration is open now.
