 Agreements Upon Account Creation

By creating an account with us, you agree to the following Statements:

The Society of Christian Scholars Statement of Faith

In accord with the ancient creeds of the Christian faith such as the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed, the following statement of faith is a summary of essential biblical teaching as we strive for unity in essentials, liberty in non-essentials, and charity in all things.

We Believe…

…in the Holy Scriptures as originally given by God, divinely inspired, infallible, entirely trustworthy; and the supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

… in one God, eternally existent in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

… in our Lord Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, His virgin birth, His sinless human life, His divine miracles, His vicarious and atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His ascension, His mediatorial work, and His Personal return in power and glory.

… in the Salvation of lost and sinful persons through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ by faith apart from works, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit.

… in the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the believer is enabled to live a holy life, to witness and work for the Lord Jesus Christ.

… in the Unity of the Spirit of all true believers, the Church, the Body of Christ.

… in the Resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.

The Society of Christian Scholars Purpose Statement

The Society of Christian Scholars exists to equip Christian academics to have a missional and redemptive influence for Christ among their students, colleagues, institutions, and academic disciplines.

If at any time you can no longer agree and affirm either of these statements, you should notify us and we can refund you for your current membership, if you have one, and remove your account from our service.

Account Ownership

Upon creating your account with us, you are the sole owner and may not share your account’s access with anyone. If you are found to be sharing your account, the account will be terminated.

  • You are able to cancel your membership at any time from your Account page on the Society of Christian Scholars website.
  • If you choose to cancel your membership, you will no longer have access to the community or other services provided when your current membership expires.

Intellectual Property Rights

The Society of Christian Scholars is committed to a high level of legal and ethical standards, consistent with our values and Statement of Faith. Our commitment to our values includes and requires respecting the intellectual property rights of our suppliers, partners, employees, independent contractors, and others, including other independent organizations and individuals. No employee, independent contractor, unsalaried fellow, or agent should steal or misuse the intellectual property rights owned or maintained by another. Similarly, the Society of Christian Scholars is committed to protecting its own intellectual property from infringement by others and no employee, independent contractor, volunteer, or agent shall fail to protect the Intellectual Property of the Society of Christian Scholars. Intellectual Property includes knowledge, creative ideas, or expressions of the human mind that have commercial value and are protectable under copyright, patent, service mark, trademark, or trade secret laws from imitation, infringement, and dilution. Intellectual property includes brand names, discoveries, formulas, inventions, knowledge, registered designs, software, and works of artistic, literary, or musical nature. It is one of the most readily tradable properties in the digital marketplace. The provisions of this policy are subject to any applicable laws, regulations or specific provisions of the grants

or contracts that govern the rights in Intellectual Property. All employees, independent contractors, and members of the Society of Christian Scholars will receive a copy of the policy at hire, upon membership purchase, or upon modification of the policy.

General Copyright Policy

The ownership of the various rights associated with copyright is dependent upon the specific type of Copyrightable Work that is created. The Society of Christian Scholars shall assert limited ownership of Copyrightable Works as set forth below. Unless otherwise provided for under this policy, all rights associated with Copyrightable Works produced as “work Made for Hire” or other works that make “Substantial Use” of our resources belong to us. “Work for Hire” is defined as a contractual relationship in which we pay for the creation of a specific Copyrightable Work. The ownership of the Copyrightable Work will be expressly defined in a written contract prior to the creation of the Copyrightable Work. “Work for Hire” also includes the creation of Copyrightable Works, specifically listed as a job responsibility in the employee’s Position Description. For the purposes of the policy, “Substantial Use” will be defined as more than ten percent of the employee’s scheduled work time over a period of more than three months or requiring more than $10,000 in our resources per fiscal year. We assert ownership of publications, website pages, training materials, and fundraising/communication pieces

prepared specifically for the Society of Christian Scholars, including but not limited to the Society of Christian Scholars website, “The Addenda”, Society of Christian Scholars Study Guides, and Society of Christian Scholars Book Reviews. Some website pages, such as our Resource Library, contain curated resources. We do not claim ownership of any curated resources unless they were specifically created for the Society of Christian Scholars as described within this policy.

  1. Courseware and Curriculum
    1. We shall have limited ownership or control rights for Courseware and Curriculum as specified below:
    2. When employees/volunteers develop Courseware and Curriculum without specific direction by us, unless otherwise agreed, the ownership of the courseware shall
remain with the employee/volunteer. The Author(s) shall acknowledge the Society of Christian Scholars as his/her sponsor or employer in the publication notes, whenever possible.
    3. When we specifically direct the creation of Courseware and Curriculum and supply the employee/volunteer with materials and time to develop the Courseware and Curriculum, the resulting materials belong to us. We may specifically agree to share revenues and control rights with the employee/volunteer.
  2. Scholarly and Artistic Works
    1. Notwithstanding our ownership of Copyrightable Works made with Substantial
Use of our Resources and Work Made for Hire, the ownership of blogs, textbooks, curricula, course materials, lectures, presentations, learning modules, scholarly monographs, trade publications, maps, charts, articles in popular magazines and newspapers, novels, nonfiction works, supporting materials, artistic works, and like works, whether in physical, electronic, or any other media of expression, shall reside with the Author/Creator(s) and any revenue derived from their work shall belong to the Author/Creator(s).
  3. Manuscripts for Academic Journals and Written Products of Scholarly Work.
    1. Notwithstanding our ownership of Copyrightable Works made with Substantial
Use of our resources and Work Made for Hire, the ownership of written products of scholarly work, such as conference publications, manuscripts for publication in academic journals, and similar written work product, shall reside with the Author(s), and any revenue derived from the works shall belong to the Author(s).
    2. If the scholarly work is to be published and is not made with Substantial Use of our resources or a Work Made for Hire, the Author(s) shall request the right to provide us with a royalty-free right to use the work within its teaching, research, and service programs, but not for external distribution, and, if successful, the Author(s) shall grant such right to us.
    3. If the scholarly work is to be published and is not made with Substantial Use of our resources or a Work Made for Hire, the Author(s) shall acknowledge the Society of Christian Scholars as his/her sponsor or employer in the publication notes.
  4. Digital Courses and Webinars
    1. Our digital learning materials and webinars will incorporate content developed by individuals who are not employed by us as well as those who are employees and/or volunteers. In keeping with the tradition in higher education that academic works such as articles, lectures, visual materials, and other teaching materials are owned by the author, rather than the employing organization, the copyright to the academic content shall be owned by the author(s) content owner.
    2. Our digital courses and webinars will be delivered through or otherwise
incorporate Digital Delivery Infrastructure, at times in combination with third-party software or delivery platforms. Such Infrastructure shall be owned by us or, as needed, used by agreement with third-party owners.
    3. Notwithstanding the author’s ownership of the content, we shall have a
royalty-free right to use the work within its teaching, research, and service programs, but not for external distribution without the express consent of the author.
  5. Grant Sponsors
    1. In cases when the grant sponsor claims ownership of a copyright or invention as part of the grant process, we retain a royalty-free right to use the intellectual property for any internal research and teaching purposes. Grant applicants should refer to each specific grant’s requirements.
  6. Unauthorized Use of Copyrightable Materials:
    1. Unauthorized file sharing of copyrighted material, distribution of others’ copyrighted works, and illegal downloading violate federal copyright law. Subject to limited exceptions, owners of
the copyright in a work have exclusive rights to:
      1. reproduce, photocopy, or make an electronic copy of the copyrighted work
      2. prepare derivative works based upon the copyrighted work
      3. distribute copies of the work to the public by sale, transfer or lending
      4. perform or display the work publicly
    2. Even if no formal copyright notice is attached, written text, music, movies, digital images, and computer software are some examples of intellectual property protected by copyright. The same legal protections for copyrighted works exist in an electronic environment as they do in a paper environment.
    3. Making or distributing an electronic copy of a copyrighted work by any means constitutes reproduction of the work, and illegal copying may subject students and others who engage in copyright infringement to significant civil and criminal penalties,
    4. We will take appropriate disciplinary action against those who violate copyright laws, including terminating your account with us.
    5. Copyright law includes the “Fair Use” principle for non-profit, educational organizations. “Fair Use” provides that the reproduction of copyright-protected works for certain limited, educational purposes does not constitute a copyright infringement. The Copyright Act establishes a four factor test, the “fair use test,” to use to determine whether a use of a copyrighted work is fair use that does not require the permission of the copyright owner. To determine whether a proposed use is a fair use, you must consider the following four factors, on which we elaborate more below:
      1. Purpose: The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature, or is for nonprofit education purposes.
      2. Nature: The nature of the copyrighted work.
      3. Amount: The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole.
      4. Effect: The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work.

We take copyright protection seriously. If you believe we have been complicit in the unauthorized use of copyright materials, please contact us with information on what materials and the manner of unauthorized use.

Unless you are the owner of the copyrighted material on our website, you must not:

  1. Republish material from https://scshub.net
  2. Sell, rent or sub-license material from https://scshub.net
  3. Reproduce, duplicate or copy material from https://scshub.net
