Heart, Mind, and Mission: Reflections on the Initiatives of the Society of Christian Scholars-Africa by Monica B. Chibita – Thursday, 19 November 2026 at 1400 UTC

The Society of Christian Scholars-Africa (SCS-Africa) was established in 2021 to extend the Society’s mission of ‘equipping scholars for missional and redemptive influence for Christ among their students, colleagues, institutions, and academic disciplines’ to the African continent. SCS-Africa is currently established in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia. It has two major programs: 1. Program 500 which focuses on spiritual formation and 2. Fellowship of African Christian Researchers and Authors (FACRA) with the objective to inspire Christian scholars to think, research, and publish from a Christian perspective.

On Thursday, 19 November 2026 at 1400 UTC, Dr Monica Chibita, an academic and leader of the Society of Christian Scholars in Africa, will share the dream of SCS-Africa for establishing a research and retreat centre that will consolidate the work of Programme 500 and FACRA. The Centre will provide the physical and intellectual infrastructure needed to sustain and deepen the work begun and give African Christian scholarship a home where scholars can formulate questions arising from African realities, develop Christian scholarship, engage global scholarship from an African perspective, and contribute to the transformation of curricula, universities, and disciplines. While the Centre is based in Africa, it will be a global platform, open to collaborative work with scholars from other regions. It will serve as a space where scholars from around the world can engage in robust dialogue and contribute to pressing global issues.

With three decades of teaching and administrative experience at higher education institutions, Prof. Chibita’s research and publications have been in the broad area of media, democracy and development, with particular interest in indigenous language media and participation. Having done her studies in Africa and the United States, she has a Doctor of Literature and Philosophy in Communication degree. She has served on several boards including Uganda’s Broadcasting Council, the African Centre for Media Excellence, the East Africa Communication Association, AMREF Health Africa (Uganda), World Vision Uganda, Society of Christian Scholars (Uganda) where she is currently Vice-President as well as on the governing Councils of Uganda Christian University and Kyambogo University.

A prolific writer and editor, Prof. Chibita has served on the editorial and advisory boards of several academic journals. She remains committed to amplifying the voice of Christian scholars in the public square.
